FISHER.GIFSPACER.GIFFisher, Admiral John Arbuthnot, 1st Baron Fisher of Kilverstone. (1841-1920) Born Ceylon.

Fisher has been called the creator of the modern British Navy. Specialised in gunnery and ordnance, the major revisor of the British 'Gunnery Manual.' Responsible for preparing the Royal Navy for war, strengthening the Home Fleet, modernising weapons, and introduced the 'all-big-gun' battleship (HMS D readnought, 1906). Retired from the Admiralty in 1910, but was recalled by First Lord Winston Churchill on the forced retirement of Prince Louis of Battenberg. Resigned as a result of the failure of the Dardanelles Kanakkale Bogazi operations.
