BERNSTRF.GIFSPACER.GIFBernstorff, Count Johann Heinrich von. Born in London, son of a Prussian Junker, a former minister to England, and an American, the former Jeanne Luckemeyer. Bernstorff was appointed ambassador to the United States and Mexico from 1908 to 1917. He reported primarily to Zimmermann during the war, and was the intended recipient of the famous Zimmerman Telegram. Before the war, he threw lavish parties at the embassy and was a favorite in Washington social circles. After the outbreak of hostilites he regularly voiced opposition to the then-neutral US's shipping of munitions to Allied powers. His army attaché, von Papen, and naval attaché, Boy-Ed, were active in repatriating Germans in the US.
