Saw early service in Burma, and in the Second Anglo-Boer War. Brigadier General and commander of 5th Cavalry Brigade in France and Belgium during 1914-15, he became commander of 2d Cavalry Division (1915-16) from whence he was transferred to Egypt to lead the Mounted Desert Column at Gaza (26-28 March 1917), where communications failure led to withdrawal of the column, but Chetwode attacked again on 17-19 April. General Allenby appointed him Commander of XX Corps, and Chetwode's forces operated successfully against Beersheva, again against Gaza, captured Jerusalem (8 December), and then participated at the battle of Megiddo
