Cadorna commanded victorious Italian armies during the first two and a half years that Italy was a belligerent. After the battle of Caporetto, at a loss ultimately of some 350,000 men, Cadorna was replaced by General Diaz (November, 1917), and was given the blame for the calamity and forced into retirement on 2 December 1918. Later, he became the Italian member of the Inter-Allied War Council at Versailles.
