Brigadier General and commander of 5th Cavalry Brigade in France and Belgium during 1914-15, he became commander of 2d Cavalry Division (1915-16) from whence he was transferred to Egypt to lead the Mounted Desert Column at Gaza (26-28 March 1917), where communications failure led to withdrawal of the column, but Chetwode attacked again on 17-19 April.
